How to Repair Sagging  Ceilings

Considered by many interior designers as the fifth wall of a room, the ceiling gives additional design and dimension in a room. Having a cement render ceiling is one of the best designs a home could have because it Decorative Ceilings and Walls Adelaide Ceiling Repairsis both durable and elegant when painted or rendered with fitting materials. However, certain conditions like heavy rains or snow storms would bear a big problem for the ceiling. Sagging ceilings occur because of accumulated moisture that causes the material to expand and subsequently sag. People who experience this are problematic because of the hassle that it creates. Most people also think that the only solution for it is complete replacement. However, there are many ways on how to treat and repair a sagging ceiling. This article will provide you a step-by-step approach on how to fix this problem.

1. Put a sheet or rug below the damaged ceiling, this would prevent any paint or dirt from falling directly on the floor which could cause more problems. You will be dealing with plasters and paint so make sure that other fixtures or elements on the room are secured away from the damaged ceiling to prevent any accidental spills or stains.

2. Prepare some plaster washers. This material is used by renderers to fix or patch up any loose ceiling parts. These are metal discs that help in treating a sagging wall. You can always buy this on a hardware store.

3. Remove the paint on the ceiling by using a mesh sander. Be careful when doing this because any excess sanding could make the ceiling thin and more vulnerable to damage.

4. Use wall panels to secure the ceiling back to the attic floor. You can detach temporarily the ceiling and relocate it to the seams. Push the drywall and run nails to further secure the ceiling.

5. Acquire a primer to be applied to the ceiling especially on obvious stains from water leakage. Primers are used before rendering the wall or ceiling because it allows the rendering material to adhere better. Wait for the primer to completely dry off.

6. Use a drywall compound and apply it by using a roller.

7. Last but not the least, apply the paint. With this step you can also add some designs on your ceiling. It is never too late to redesign the ceiling and turn it into a more attractive piece of your house.

Harsh weather affects a house. Make sure that you  check the exterior of your house to see if there are holes that provide passage for water or snow to the attic or ceiling layer.

Hang a shelf on a Plasterboard Wall

Hanging shelves on a  plasterboard wall can be difficult. Here is a guide that can help you with simple steps to get your shelves up.

Tools and equipment
You will need the following to complete this project:

  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Brackets
  • Tape measure
  • Plasterboard anchors
  • Stud finder
  • Level
  • Electrical detector

First Test your wall for electricity cables
Check the area  to make sure there are no electriccables  behind the walls. If you accidently screw into the cables this could cause a fire. It’s important to follow the instructions for the model of your detector. Your electrical detector will buzz when a current is detected. Place your shelving unit on a location that is clear of any electrical currents.

Mark the location of the shelf
You will want to mark the corners of where you wish to place your shelf. Use pencil markings that can be cleaned off easily. Make sure you measure out the length of the shelves and figure out how far from the end you will want the brackets placed.

Fix the anchors on the wall
Plasterboard is very weak and you will have to make sure your anchors are designed to be used on plasterboard and have a strong screw to fasten.

Attach your brackets
Tighten up your screws until 1/8 inch is protruding beyond the anchor and your wall. Place the hole of the bracket over the head of the screw and push down, next locate the screw in the recess. Wiggle on the bracket up and down to see how much room there is to play with. If it’s too much remove it and tighten the screw about 180 degrees and try wiggling the bracket again. Repeat this step until there is little moving and the bracket fits tight.

Fit in the shelving unit
The next and last step in this process of placing shelving units onto plasterboard is to fit the shelves in place making sure you measure both ends of the shelf. This way you can balance it perfectly between the brackets. This will make sure your final product is a perfect balanced shelf.
