Either way you are lucky because small holes in Gyprock are pretty simple to repair.
The overall process takes a few days time but isn’t really too difficult to complete on your own. Make sure you have all the necessary tools prior to starting the job.
What is needed to patch up a Gyprock wall?
You need a few simple materials than you may get started with the entire process. The materials required for gyprock fixing are as follows:
- Drop Cloth
- Dust Mask
- Clean Rag
- Bottle of Water
- Drywall compound
- Drywall sponge that has sand paper on one side
- Utility Knife
- Putty Knife that is at least 4 inches wide.
Now that you have gathered all the appropriate materials you will want to start following steps to fix the hole.
How to fix a hole in Gyprock ™
Lay out the drop cloth you have gathered for your working space. Next, you want to clean out the hole from the edges to ensure you shave down any roughness and debris from the surface. It really doesn’t have to be perfect, but good enough so that the plasterboard doesn’t stick out. You will then want to make an indention around the edge of the hole so the compound will settle down evenly. The first coat of the compound should be made higher than the wall. With a few small strokes you want to apply the first coat no more than 1/8 inch thick.Any thicker and it will be more difficult to smooth over and may end up cracking before it dries. Adding water to the compound will help to soften it up, and make it easier for you to remove if needed. You will want to allow this coat to dry overnight. You then can sand down any higher spots and apply a second coat – following the same techniques above and allow to dry overnight again. Next you can sand to make it level with the wall around it.
After all the work is finished you will need to prime the patch, and let it dry, and then paint to match the surrounding wall.
