Put up a shelf on Plasterboard
Hang a shelf on a Plasterboard Wall
Hanging shelves on a plasterboard wall can be difficult. Here is a guide that can help you with simple steps to get your shelves up.
Tools and equipment
You will need the following to complete this project:
- Pencil
- Screwdriver
- Brackets
- Tape measure
- Plasterboard anchors
- Stud finder
- Level
- Electrical detector
First Test your wall for electricity cables
Check the area to make sure there are no electriccables behind the walls. If you accidently screw into the cables this could cause a fire. It’s important to follow the instructions for the model of your detector. Your electrical detector will buzz when a current is detected. Place your shelving unit on a location that is clear of any electrical currents.
Mark the location of the shelf
You will want to mark the corners of where you wish to place your shelf. Use pencil markings that can be cleaned off easily. Make sure you measure out the length of the shelves and figure out how far from the end you will want the brackets placed.
Fix the anchors on the wall
Plasterboard is very weak and you will have to make sure your anchors are designed to be used on plasterboard and have a strong screw to fasten.
Attach your brackets
Tighten up your screws until 1/8 inch is protruding beyond the anchor and your wall. Place the hole of the bracket over the head of the screw and push down, next locate the screw in the recess. Wiggle on the bracket up and down to see how much room there is to play with. If it’s too much remove it and tighten the screw about 180 degrees and try wiggling the bracket again. Repeat this step until there is little moving and the bracket fits tight.
Fit in the shelving unit
The next and last step in this process of placing shelving units onto plasterboard is to fit the shelves in place making sure you measure both ends of the shelf. This way you can balance it perfectly between the brackets. This will make sure your final product is a perfect balanced shelf.
